A physiological and biochemical approach to selecting the ideal diet for Ostrea edulis (L.) broodstock conditioning (part A) ArchiMer
Gonzalez-araya, Ricardo; Queau, Isabelle; Quere, Claudie; Moal, Jeanne; Robert, Rene.
To select the best microalgae for Ostrea edulis conditioning, four single species diets were fed to batches of broodstock, which were then compared using physiological and biochemical approaches. Ingestion and absorption were first studied, showing that Chaetoceros gracilis and Skeletonema marinoï were efficiently ingested (4.9–5.3 mg g−1 h−1) and absorbed (1.9–2.5 mg g−1 h−1) while Tetraselmis suecica led to the lowest physiological responses (0.36 and 0.12 mg g−1 h−1 respectively). When O. edulis were fed any microalgae except T-ISO with only 79 mg g−1, gonads accumulated carbohydrates from 116 to 141 mg g−1 and the extent of accumulation depended on the species supplied in the order T. suecica<C. gracilis<S. marinoï. When oysters were fed either...

ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Zanette, Yvan; Heral, Maurice; Masse, Henri; Garnier, Jacqueline.
The breeding of Pacific oysters Crassostra gigas, in non tidal ponds, before commercialization, brings about an improvement of the shell and of the quantity and quality of the tissues. In fact, the Berthome's indice (1978) moves from 1.36 in June to 0.68 December, and the density of the shell increases in the same time from 1.79 to 1.98. On the other hand, the percentage of tissues in the oyster is 12.4% at the end of gametogenesis and more than 9% at the end of breeding. The dry tissues are composed of 10.3 of ash, 40.3% of proteins, 12.6% of lipids and 9% of carbohydrate. 95% of the carbohydrate are glycogen. The resulting energetic values are measured to 5.10 cal-mg super(-1) of dry tissues ash free.

in mollusc hatcheries. Consequently, we assessed themost commonly used species to establish their growth and size profiles, their cytomorphological, biochemical, biomolecular identification as well as their cytometer signs, and also their ability to grow under extreme conditions of temperature and salinity. This work aimed at matching the conformity of the strains used in Argenton (dispatched to most of the French commercial hatcheries) to those of a referenced culture collection. A previous screening preceded this study, because of the 45 species and/or clones held originally, Argenton kept no more than 15 species. As most of the latter are also represented in referenced collection, our strains are therefore correctly identified. On the other hand, the...

Goulletquer, Philippe; Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice.
Growth and proximate biochemical composition of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica were studied in the Patuxent river (Maryland), located in the middle reach of the Chesapeake bay (U.S.A.). The effects of stocking densities and environmental variables (depth, temperature) were examined in 1989-1990 on oyster population by using off-bottom culture. No significant density effect was observed on the shell growth, which is described by using a seasonally oscillating function. In contrast, the meat growth and the proximate biochemical composition were bath affected by the stacking density and the depth location. The variability of the resulting effects was observed based on a seasonal trend. Different hypothesis mainly related tO environmental conditions...

Biochemical composition and energy value of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) cultured in the bay of Marennes-Oleron ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice.
In the bay of Marennes-Oleron the dry flesh of Crassostrea gigas ranged from 29 to 52% proteins, 10 to 23% ash, 6 to 20% lipids and 0 to 4% carbohydrates of which 48.3 ± 21.6% were glycogen. The energy value ranged from 18.84 to 23.47 joule. Mg(-1) ash free dry weight (mean 20.27 J. mg(-1). Reproductive effort varied from 17.8 to 55.9% dry weight for males, and 43.1 to 61.9% for females during the first and third year of reproduction respectively. A high energy value for female gametes (23.47 to 26.24 J. mg(-1) dry tissue) was mainly due to a higher level of lipids (17.3 to 23% of dry tissue) in female gametes as compared to that in male gametes (5.9 to 12.3% of dry tissue). During the period of mass-loss which began in October and finished in March, the...

Biochemical substrates expenses and respiration at short-term starvation of marine planktonic animals ArchiMer
Pavlova, Z; Morozova, A; Gaudy, R; Shchepkin, V.
One of the most important indices at estimation of productivity characteristics of hydrobionts is oxygen consumed in the process of respiration. Usually respiration (standard metabolism) is measured in small-volume respirometres (30-50 ml) where animals' activity is considerably restricted. It may underestimate respiration in comparison to natural one. Therefore respirometres of larger volume were used. Simultaneously under same conditions we tried to estimate energy requirements by expense of main biochemical components of organic matter (lipids, protein, glycogen). Results were used to calculate energy budget and to compare energy expenditures, measured according to consumed oxygen and tissue substrates expense.

Changes in proximate composition and lipid quality of atherina atherina sp. during sun drying process OceanDocs
Selmi, S.; Bouriga, N.; Faure, E.; Trabelsi, M..
Telahigue, K.; Rabeh, I.; Chetoui, I.; Romdhane, M.S..

Correlation between fertility and levels of protein, sugar and free amino acids in seminal plasma of Nelore bulls Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Assumpção,T.I.; Torres Júnior,R.A.A.; Sousa,M.V.; Ricart,C.A.O..
Correlations between fertility and the concentrations of proteins, reducing sugars and 17 types of free amino acids in the seminal plasma of Nelore bulls were estimated. The samples were collected from 19 bulls that had high quality semen, according to physical and morphological analyses. The bulls had their fertility scores estimated based on the pregnancy of the females mated to them during three consecutive breeding seasons, either by artificial insemination or by natural breeding. A large variability in the concentrations of the molecules was observed among the samples and a significant correlation coefficient (r= 0.90) between levels of proteins and reducing sugars was estimated. None of the components showed a significant correlation with fertility.

Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice.
In the bay of Marennes-Oléron, the shell represents 60% and the dry flesh from 3 to 8.5% of the total weight of Crepidula fornicata. Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition of the dry flesh show two periods of spawning for the females and a single period of reproduction for the males, and that the main component of the energy reserve is glycogen. The mean energy value of Crepidula fornicata varies between 15.1 and 19.3 joules/mg of ash-free dry weight of flesh (average 17.7) and this value is higher in the males than the females, during aIl the periods of reproduction. The females lay, as early as their third year, about 56 egg capsules at each spawning, containing a total of Il 725 eggs with an energy value of 22.4 joules/mg ash free dry weight.

Pavlova lutheri was cultivated in carboys using batch technique and in a flat alveolar photobioreactor (FAP), using initially batch and then semi-continuous techniques. Growth and productivity of the cultures were compared and their nutritional quality was assessed by analysing their biochemical composition (gross composition, fatty acids and sterols) and by evaluating their food value for Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) larvae as bispecific diet in association with Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum. The highest productivity was achieved with the FAP operating in semi-continuous mode. Gross composition of P. lutheri was similar in all cultures, while cellular organic matter content of the microalga grown in FAP in semi-continuous mode was lower....

Effect of the density of the culture and the depth on the seasonal variation of the biochemical composition of Crassostrea virginica in patuxent river (Chesapeake Bay) ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Forget, Maïté; Bougrier, Serge; Razet, Daniel.
The project of cultivation of oyster has been designed to evaluate the growth rate, the mortality, the reproductive effort, production and biochemical composition of the oyster function of the density and the depth. This plan was intended: - to build model of growth rate, - to demonstrate the action of the different parameters on growth rate (temperature, food effect...), - to evaluate the density effect to see if the available food could be a limiting factor, - to estimate the effect of the depth joined to the impact of the high turbidity near the bot tom, - to detect the mortality related to the prevalence of diseases. The project began in July 1989 by dredging 20 000 small oysters at the mouth of the Patuxent River near Cove Point. Three experimental...

OceanDocs
El Cafsi., M.; Kheriji., S.; Masmoudi., W.; Romdhane., M.S..

Electron microprobe analysis of suspended matter in the Angola Basin OMA
Bernard, P.; Eisma, D.; Van Grieken, R..
Electron microprobe analysis of suspended-matter samples collected at different water depths at ten stations in the Angola Basin indicated that at each station, from top to bottom, the elementary composition of the suspended matter was very similar and differed from the composition of the suspended matter at the adjacent stations. This indicates that the downward settling of the suspended matter is much faster than the horizontal transport and mixing by the currents. Assuming that the suspended matter settles in the form of flocs, or is scavenged by settling flocs, the suspended matter can indeed reach the bottom in a shorter period than needed for the currents to cover the distance between adjacent stations. Comparison with sediment trap data from the...
